Straight into the deep end of art: Making Waves at HIM business school. A student perspective of a student art exhibit.
Seas of imagination collided with the opening of “Making Waves”, a limited time group exhibition featuring artworks created by classes 3/4B&C of the BBA programme at HIM Business School. Displayed within the historic setting of Hotel Europe, the modernity of the young minds behind the pieces shines through. Each artist created an artwork that showcased not only themselves, but also what waves meant to them. The exhibition revolves around the central theme of the sea, after a visit to “Thalassa! Thalassa! Imagery of the sea” at the MCBA, Lausanne. Despite this central theme, a great variety of mediums, techniques, and individuality is shown throughout the exhibition.
Each of 50 artists took inspiration to create an artwork conveying the exhibition theme through their own eyes, whether it be current global environmental issues, their countries’ traditions, their current locale, or their personal reflections. One particular artist, Valeriia Suchak, created a montage of her own photos, creating a commentary on how her life has been impacted by the continual sexualisation of women’s bodies. Almost directly next to Suchak’s work rests a piece by Hannes Landergren, another artist defining what “Making Waves” means to him. A DJ by trade, Landergren incorporates the sound wave of his favourite song within the piece, almost acting as a yang to the yin of the lightning, both of which are distorted to form a spiral.
The exhibition came to fruition through the planning of Alexia Green, art professor and communications specialist at a Geneva-based gallery. Explaining that throughout the 11-week Introduction to Art course, she aims to tease out the creativity of her students to empower them to make an artwork that not only they did not think they could create, but also one they could be proud of producing and displaying. The exhibition further acts to teach the students the practical aspects of running an exhibition, skills which can then be applied to a multitude of real-world scenarios.
The “Making Waves” exhibition will be on display from the 9th to the 19th of December 2024.
