Swissquote Kicks Off Financial Education Partnership with HIM

The students in Mr. Tumong’s finance class at HIM Business School recently experienced an engaging and insightful lecture on the basics of investing presented by Swissquote, Switzerland’s leading online bank. This event marked the beginning of a new partnership between HIM and Swissquote, aimed at enhancing the financial education of business students and setting them up for future financial success.

As part of this collaboration, Swissquote has committed to supporting HIM students through interactive lectures on Securities Trading Fundamentals and Wealth Management, and backing the HIM Business Club. During the presentation, students were introduced to the different types of financial assets and key concepts in investing. Students also explored Swissquote’s innovative trading and investment platform, and learned practical investment strategies for growing wealth via their own custom investment portfolio. To make the experience even more hands-on, students were invited to open a Swissquote account with a 200-franc trading credit, allowing them to explore the platform in real-time.

Key takeaways from Swissquote's advice to investors

Investing in the stock market offers a pathway to financial freedom, but it requires understanding both the benefits of investing and the real risks involved. Creating an investing plan is essential to balance opportunities and risks while ensuring that basic expenses are covered. Diversifying through a "basket of stocks" or choosing an appropriate "asset mix" increases chances of success and provides stability over time.

One of the biggest investing mistakes is acting without a clear strategy or succumbing to market noise. By focusing on long-term goals and avoiding emotional decisions, investors can see steady returns over time. The key lies in understanding the different kinds of investments, from stocks to ETFs, and tailoring them to your objectives.

Swissquote emphasizes the importance of learning to make informed decisions. Whether it's building a saving plan or understanding the psychology of investing, having the right tools and education can help turn your vision into success.

As an online Swiss bank with a user-friendly banking and investing platform, Swissquote provides diverse investment opportunities ranging from individual stocks, mutual funds, ETFs, cryptocurrencies and derivatives. The platform caters to both individuals and corporate clients, emphasizing accessibility, education, and innovation. With a strong emphasis on client education, Swissquote provided additional age-appropriate money management concepts and advice to boost the financial literacy of our students.

Features to build financial security:

  1. Fractional Trading:  No matter the stock price you can start investing with as little as 1 CHF, allowing even beginners to purchase portions of high-value stocks.

  1. Savings Plans: Automated investing with recurring purchases in selected stocks or ETFs, enables effortless long-term wealth growth. Proving that regular investing, even with small amounts of money, build a nest egg over a long time period.

  1. Theme Trading: Create portfolios focused on personal interests, such as sustainability or technology, for aligned and meaningful investments.

  1. Multi-Currency Accounts: Hold and exchange currencies or even convert them to gold, offering diversification options.

  1. Educational Resources: Access webinars, podcasts, and guides designed to demystify investing and empower users.

Sometimes the simplest approach is the best. You don’t need to be an investment specialist to start investing—it’s about taking the first step.

Putting investment theory into trading action

Swissquote brought investing to life with a fun, hands-on demonstration during the session. To illustrate how simple and accessible trading can be, one of the three presenters from Swissquote, Stefano Gianti, asked for a volunteer to place a live trade on Swissquote’s platform. After a brief pause, one student nervously asked, "With real money?" The room chuckled as the speaker reassured them with a smile, "Yes, but with my money."

Guided by Mr. Gianti, the student explored the platform, learning how to select an asset—such as a stock or ETF—choose between a market or limit order, and execute a trade. Mr. Gianti explained the benefits of diversification, suggesting starting with broad indices like the S&P 500, saying, "This is one of the easiest ways to build a diversified portfolio."

The student navigated the platform to select a European stock, and with a click of the “Trade” button, successfully placed their first trade. “Congratulations, you’re now an investor!” Mr. Gianti announced, prompting applause and laughter from the room.

This interactive exercise not only demonstrated the platform’s intuitive design but also gave students the confidence to approach investing, turning a previously intimidating process into an exciting and empowering experience.

When you are young, you have a big advantage. Starting early, even with small amounts, can really create wealth over time.

Basic strategies for student investors:

  • Start Early: Time is an investor’s greatest ally, allowing for compounding growth and mitigating the impact of mistakes made by beginner investors by using smaller initial investments.

  • Understand Your Risk Profile: Tailor your strategy based on your comfort with risk, whether it’s steady ETFs or volatile assets like Bitcoin.

  • Invest for the Long Term: Ignore market noise and focus on consistent growth over a longer period of time to benefit from the market’s overall upward trend.

Swissquote stands out as a pioneer in financial innovation, offering a wide range of advanced tools such as securities lending, which allows investors to generate additional income, and robust market analysis features that empower clients to make informed decisions throughout their investing journey.
