#GenZSlang

In an era where digital trends shape conversations, even academia is stepping up its game. Case in point: our Dean and Assistant Dean recently decided to tackle the challenge of speaking fluent Gen Z slang, all in the name of campus connection and community engagement. The result? Pure gold, and we’re here to break it down for you. Spoiler: it's highkey goated.

Why this video is giving influencer era vibes 🌟

In a bold (and undeniably entertaining) attempt to promote a campus event, our academic leaders traded their scholarly tones for the casual cadence of Gen Z. What emerged was a video that didn’t just turn heads—it went viral, proving that even the most serious figures can embrace a little levity.

The genius of this initiative lies in its relatability. Sure, watching our Deans wrestle with phrases like "that slaps" and "it's giving" was hilarious, but it also showed their willingness to connect with students on their level. The video struck a chord, gaining traction not just for its humor but for its heart.

Breaking down Gen Z slang: A survival guide for all generations 📚

For those new to this linguistic frontier, here’s a cheat sheet featuring some of the standout slang that made it into the video:

  • Slay: To excel or succeed brilliantly.
Example: "The way Mr. Smith explained digital marketing today? Total slay."
  • That slaps: Describes something impressive or enjoyable.
    Example: "The raclette slaps today!"
  • Hi Queens: A playful and inclusive greeting for friends.
Example: "Hi Queens! Ready to pull an all-nighter at the library?"
  • Lowkey a vibe: When something is subtly enjoyable or cool.
Example: "This study group is lowkey a vibe."
  • It’s giving influencer era: When something exudes influencer culture vibes.
Example: "The SAF’s Instagram account? It's giving influencer era."
  • Understand the assignment: To grasp and excel at a task or goal.
Example: "That student who brought snacks to the group project meeting? They understand the assignment."
  • Highkey goated: Something undeniably impressive or the greatest of all time (G.O.A.T.).
Example: "The new terrace is highkey goated."

Why this matters: Language as a bridge 🌈

Language isn’t static; it evolves with each generation, and embracing those changes can foster understanding and connection. This playful experiment by our Deans is a testament to the idea that communication is about more than just words—it’s about building relationships.

At our school, where our tagline is “Be World Ready,” we recognize the importance of engaging with global culture in all its forms. From mastering hospitality trends to decoding the latest social media lingo, our students are equipped to navigate and shape the dynamic global landscape.

The takeaway

Our Deans’ Gen Z slang challenge was more than just a lighthearted attempt to understand their students—it was a reminder that stepping outside of your comfort zone can lead to meaningful connections. Whether it’s mastering a new language or simply sharing a laugh, it’s these moments that build bridges across generations.

So, next time you hear a professor casually drop a "yeet" in class, remember: they’re not just trying to be cool. They’re celebrating the beauty of linguistic evolution, one "slay" at a time.

And that? Well, it’s giving goated energy.
