COVID-19 Guidelines

In response to the latest Swiss federal safety measures (28 October) to combat COVID-19, the following changes will be made effective from Monday 2 November until further notice. All theory classes will go online in our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), and practical sessions that require a physical presence will continue at a reduced size. We continue to be in regular contact with the Swiss Health Authorities to ensure we are implementing the latest health and safety initiatives.


  • What type of health & safety procedures should I follow as I travel to campus?
    • It is mandatory to wear a face mask (covering your nose and mouth) on all public transportation in Switzerland, as well as in all waiting and access areas for public transport. You must also wear a mask in all publicly accessible establishments and inside spaces. This includes shops, banks, cinemas and restaurants.
    • Avoid close contact by staying at least 1.5 metres from anyone who is not from your household.
    • Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol).
    • Avoid contact with anyone who is sick.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
    • On arrival at both the airport and on campus, students will have their temperature checked and will be provided with welcome information, a face mask, health and safety guidelines, and contact information in case of emergency.
    • If a student presents with fever or flu-like symptoms at the airport, arrangements will be made regarding transportation, and follow-up support provided on campus.
  • What should I expect when I arrive on campus?
    • When arriving on campus, all students will have their temperature taken and complete a health survey. Anyone showing symptoms of flu, fever, breathing difficulties, and/or respiratory problems will immediately quarantine on campus, health authorities will be informed, and all necessary support provided.
    • During arrival weekend, students will receive information in a dedicated induction session about the Student Counsellor opening hours, who to contact outside of hours for medical advice, etc. Students will also have to ensure any outstanding forms are completed (emergency contacts, pre-existing medical issues, and others).
    • In the interest of safety, and to lower the risk for the entire community, face masks must be worn by all staff, students, and visitors in public areas.
  • What type of health & safety measures can I expect on campus?
    • Hand sanitizers and face masks are available to everyone on all campuses and in all administrative offices.
    • Temperature checks are carried out daily on all staff, students, and visitors. Checks are normally carried out at the campus reception area, after which a face mask will be provided.
    • All visitors must first get approval before coming to campus.
    • Regular cleaning and disinfection of campuses takes place, as well as additional cleaning in all public areas, particularly focusing on areas where numerous people may be touching the same item, i.e., door handles, workstations, restaurant tables, service utensils, etc .
    • Every student, staff member, and visitor must fill out a health questionnaire before entering our campus premises. Staff or visitors showing symptoms of flu, fever (38°C+), breathing difficulties and/or respiratory problems, will not be allowed on campus.
    • Class group timetables are arranged to have a steady flow of students at meals and to optimize restaurant space.
    • Masks must be worn while in the restaurant and only removed once seated at the table. Mealtimes are staggered on all campuses to ensure a steady flow and smaller groups and takeaway services are available for lunch & dinner. Four people maximum are allowed per table.
    • Priority medical appointments are available for any student who require medical assistance – please contact the Front Desk or the Residential Management Team.
    • We have minimized large public gatherings and unnecessary social activities. Any activity outside regular classes and meals is monitored.
  • What preventative measures do I need to follow on campus?
    • Masks are mandatory in any public areas (on and off) on campus.
    • We encourage everyone to maintain social distancing (in Switzerland, the minimum distance is 1.5 metres) and frequent handwashing & disinfection.
    • Download (recommended) the SwissCovid tracing app (on Google Play Store or Apple Apps Store)
  • When do I need to self-quarantine?
    • Students entering Switzerland from this list of high-risk countries must quarantine for ten days until further notice. This also applies to anyone who has visited/spent time in the listed countries in the previous 14 days.
    • A negative test result does not exempt you from the mandatory quarantine requirement or shorten the quarantine period. This is because a negative test result does not rule out an infection with the new coronavirus.
    • Exceptions to the quarantine requirement: persons who as transit passengers have stayed less than 24 hours in a country or area with an increased risk of infection.
    • Quarantine, when required, takes place on campus and we will provide you with all the relevant information when you arrive at the airport or the school. The academic and operations teams will support you during your quarantine.
    • Any staff or student displaying flu-like symptoms will be required to self-quarantine for ten days.
    • Students who are worried that they may have flu-like symptoms should phone the student counsellor and if not available, a resident manager who is available 24/7.
    • Anyone in self-quarantine on campus will be required to stay in the provided accommodation. They will not be permitted to interact with the other students/public. A staff member will check up on people in self-quarantine each day to follow up on the daily preventative measures, and meals are brought to the room.
    • If you are asked by the Swiss authorities upon arrival - please provide your school address as the location where you will quarantine.

  • Is COVID-19 testing available while on campus?
    • Yes, it is possible to get tested in case of concern or if any symptoms are being displayed (there may be a cost involved). For further details, please refer to your Student Counsellor.
    • Currently, there are two different tests available in Switzerland:
      Rapid antigen test (NEW): carried out in pharmacies with results within 15-20 minutes.
      PCR testing: carried out by a Doctor with results available within 24 – 48 hours.
    • Students awaiting results must self-quarantine.
  • I am feeling stressed by the whole situation, where can I find support?
    • Our certified psychologist, Raluca Fechete, is available for one-on-one appointments with students to help them navigate these challenging times and identify positive coping strategies.

      15 February 2021 – 18 June 2021 - Students may arrive on campus up to 4 weeks late, with prior approval from your Dean.

      SHMS Returning Students BA2, BA3, BA4:

      1 February 2021 – 4 June 2021 - Students may arrive on campus up to 4 weeks late, with prior approval from your Dean.

  • If I defer academic term/semester, who should I contact to inform / receive information?
  • Will Christmas term break be available on campus?
    • Yes, there is the possibility of staying on campus during the Christmas period for any ongoing student. In case you have not received the communication, please refer to your Front office for further information.


  • The current economic situation has hit my family and I hard. Is any financial aid available?
    • For students requiring financial assistance, new or returning in 2020, we are lowering registration fee requirements, offering a favourable payment plan without additional cost and extended financial aid. All payment plan and financial aid inquires can be addressed to Mr. Claudio Raccanello.
  • Will I be charged for health insurance if am not on campus?
    • Yes. According to Swiss Health Insurance regulations, as long as the B Permit remains valid, students need to keep the school’s health insurance plan.
  • If I decide to defer my intake, what will happen to my B Permit?
    • The B Permit will be cancelled, and you will have to re-apply for a visa.
  • If I am in Switzerland, will my health insurance cover me in the event I fall ill with COVID-19?
    • Yes. You will be fully insured by your school's insurance company and be fully treated in Switzerland. All other students on campus would then also be tested which would also be covered by the insurance company.
